Curved Glass Scratch Repair

What Is Curved Glass?

Curved glass, or bent glass, can be tempered, annealed, or laminated.  It can give a very unique look and feel to architectural glass.  Curved glass can be found in such common applications as yacht glass, radiused windows, curved glass railings, automotive glass, shower enclosures, limousine glass, aquarium glass, or revolving doors.

Curved Glass Process

Fabricating curved glass requires specialized skills.  There are only a handful of glass producers in the U.S. who create quality curved glass.  A mold must be made to the exact specifications of the desired shape.  Then the mold is heated before the glass is placed upon it.  The glass is then heated to the melting point when it begins to soften and curve and take the shape of the mold.  The temperature of heating and cooling the curved glass must be highly controlled or the glass will shatter.  The mold is coated with calcium carbonate to keep the glass from sticking.

How Curved Glass Gets Scratched

Since curved glass is heated to the melting point, it is prone to the same issues as tempered glass.  If any glass dust or other debris comes in contact with the glass during this softening process, it will become adhered to the glass surface.  Then, as will tempered glass, if scrapers are used during the cleaning process, the fabrication debris can get trapped in the leading edge of the blade and scratch the glass.

How to Save Scratched Curved Glass

On all glass surfaces, both sides of the glass are parallel to each other.  This is why objects look normal while looking thru the glass.  When one side is not parallel to the other, looking thru the glass makes objects appear wavy or distorted.  Think convex mirror.  When sanding and polishing curved glass, care is required to maintain the original curve.  Therefore, the tools used to sand, resurface, and polish the curved glass must adapt to the curve.  If hard pads are used, the surface will not be restored evenly and waviness and distortion will be noticeable.
