Repair Scratches In Curved Glass - Los Angeles, CA
To repair scratches in glass that’s flat is relatively easy. However, this glass restoration company in the Los Angeles, CA Museum of Tolerance provided some additional challenges.
As mentioned, the glass scratch repairs were in curved glass not flat. But the glass was installed and then the wall was built around the glass. So, if couldn’t repair the scratches in the glass, the entire wall would have had to be dismantled and the glass would be remanufactured and replaced! The cost for restoration vs. replacement was a no brainer on this glass job!
Where Do All These Deep Glass Scratches Come From?
The typical types of glass scratches come from three issues.

The process we used is the one we invented. It’s the dry grinding method. With curved glass however, you need a more flexible backing pad so the pad will match the curve of the glass. That’s what we implemented in this glass scratch repair project.
The result was, all the glass scratches were completely removed. The glass was polished and restored back to perfect clarity. And the final product did not result in any swirls, haze, or distortion.
Do Glass Scratch Repairs Always Come Out Perfect?
You may or may not be surprised by my answer but, no, not every glass scratch repair comes out perfect. Believe it or not, sometimes some distortion is inevitable. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar! Some factors that affect the quality of the glass scratch repairs are:
- Depth of glass scratch
- Cause of glass scratches.
- Proximity of glass scratch damage to the frame of window or door.
More accurately, it’s always a combination of all three factors to one degree or another. Removing a deep glass scratch in the middle of a large tempered panel can almost always be removed without any discernible distortion. The reason being, is that when you have area to blend the glass scratches out over a wide enough area, the distortion is spread out evenly and not discernible.
Trying to repair glass scratches, usually deeper scratches, without room to blend into the surrounding glass limits the quality of the repairs. One reason is because the same part of the pad is repeatedly going over the same area of glass. Not being able to keep the pad flat while sanding or polishing the glass can also affect the quality of the glass scratch repair process.
